Flat Rock Inn Past
This three story Victorian home was built in 1888 as a summer retreat by the wealthy Charlestonian, R. Withers Memminger. Mr. Memminger was a lawyer and later a judge. He was the son of C. G. Memminger, the first Secretary of the Treasury for the Confederate States. At one point Mr. Memminger served as a Major on the staff of Robert E. Lee. The Memminger family and staff would come up in the spring by train, taking several days to get here, and would stay until fall. The temperatures were a welcomed change from hot and humid Charleston. Our mountain breezes and cool evenings made for the perfect summer retreat. The family enjoyed their clay tennis court. They would go on picnics and always sat out on the wrap-around verandah to enjoy the cool and fresh mountain air. Life was good! Locally known as Five Oaks, the Inn served as a summer home until 1911, when it was purchased by Thomas Grimshawe from Lancaster, England. Thomas and his wife Elizabeth (pictured above) occupied the home year round until 1930 at which time the home was given to their daughter, Greta Grimshawe King and her husband, Campbell King, Sr. as a wedding gift. The Kings sold the home in 1940 and it was occupied by many owners over the next 45 years. Beginning in 1985, the home underwent serious renovation under the direction of Barthela Galloway. Purchased in December of 1992 by Dennis and Sandi Page, The Flat Rock Inn opened its doors in May of 1993. In 2006, the Inn was purchased by Sandi and Kalchit ("Dang") Jalernpan. Read about us!
